About special measures of “International Center of Excellence on Fiber Engineering”

Shinshu University Global COE has been selected as one of the Global COEs (in the field of chemistry and material science) in 2007, under a program title of “International Center of Excellence on Fiber Engineering” in the period of Year 2007 to 2011.


The objectives of the Global COE Program are to further strengthen the education and research capabilities of graduate schools in Japan and to train creative researchers who can lead the world in cutting edge research environment by establishing internationally competitive universities in Japan through strategic support of world-class education and research centers.


Therefore, the program, “International Center of Excellence on Fiber Engineering” aims at fostering excellent young researchers who are world-leading in the field of fiber engineering. In addition, the “International Fiber Engineering” course was established for the students in the “Department of Bioscience and Textile Technology” and other students attending Ueda Campus to be an international hub for research, education, and human resources in the discipline of “Fiber Engineering.” Students who complete the course subjects are conferred with a Certificate. The University implements special measures as an assistance for the students who take the course as listed below.


  • You will be acknowledged as registered student(s) of International Fiber Engineering Course and be eligible to receive the following special measures after submitting “Global COE Application for Research” sheets.
  1. About one million and two hundred thousand yen (JP\1.2 million) is granted to qualified student(s) per year as a Research Assistant (RA) salary.
    (Unqualified students: Working students, government-sponsored foreign students, students in the extended study program, students who are sponsored by another big project, and take a leave of absence from school.)
  2. Tuition fees are partially exempted by university-driven assistance for students accepted in this program.
    (Unqualified students: Students who are sponsored by another big project, take a leave of absence from school, and do not attend full-time in Ueda Campus due to sustained research at other institute.)
  3. To promote self-reliant research, JP\ 500,000 is provided per year in research funds.
    *The amount stated above is subjected to change each year depending on determined budget by the government.
    (Unqualified students: Students who receives education by the special measures of educational methods laid down in the standards for establishing graduate schools.)
  4. In order to encourage giving presentations at the international conferences, registration fees and traveling expenses are supported.
  5. English-proofreading fee and publication fee are provided when students submits their research achievement(s) to an international academic journal.
  6. Giving a support for a long-term overseas dispatch.

As for above No.3 to 5, working students taking classes at Ueda Campus are qualified.


  • Qualified students who can receive the above-mentioned supports 1-6 are selected based on individual academic performance after submission of application form in person.
  • As for the above 1, 2, and 3, the supporting amount will be determined based on individual mid-term performance evaluation each year.
  • Students are requested to attend class lectures delivered in English and make an effort to improve their communication skills and presentation ability including foreign language.
